About Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977)
English comic actor and silent-film auteur whose Tramp character defined early Hollywood and whose The Great Dictator (1940) satirized Hitler. Closely associated with Buster Keaton (silent-comedy peer of equal stature) and Harold Lloyd (third silent-comedy giant). For an intellectual contrast, see J.
