About Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977)
English comic actor and silent-film auteur whose Tramp character defined early Hollywood and whose The Great Dictator (1940) satirized Hitler. Closely associated with Buster Keaton (silent-comedy peer of equal stature) and Harold Lloyd (third silent-comedy giant). For an intellectual contrast, see J. Edgar Hoover, FBI director (1924-1972) — Hoover pursued Chaplin for years on suspected communist sympathies, leading to the 1952 revocation of Chaplin's US re-entry permit and his Swiss exile — Hoover represented the McCarthy-era national-security state that was the institutional opposite of Chaplin's pro-immigrant Tramp humanism.
