American philosopher, public intellectual, and theologian (Race Matters, 1993; Democracy Matters, 2004), now teaching at Union Theological Seminary. Closely associated with Henry Louis Gates Jr. (Harvard Black-studies collaborator) and Toni Morrison (literary peer and friend).
