I'm a rebel. I've always been a rebel. And I'll always be a rebel. It's just who I am.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, living in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid his debt, but is a victim of the times, and I wear it for the sick and lonely old.

You've got to be careful not to be a hypocrite. If you sing a song about drinking, you've got to drink. If you sing a song about shooting a man down, you've got to shoot a man down. I've done both, for the sake of art.

I've been to more jails than I have churches.

I'm not a man of violence, but I'll fight for what's mine.

I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.

My advice to you is to get married. If you find a good wife, you'll be happy; if not, you'll become a philosopher.

I wear the black for those who've never read, or listened to the words that Jesus said, about the road to happiness through love and charity. Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

I've tried to be a good man, but I've been a bad man sometimes.

I don't mind if you call me a country singer. I'm proud of that. But I'm more than a country singer.
