About Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013)
British Prime Minister (1979-1990) whose free-market reforms and confrontation with trade unions defined the late-20th-century right. Closely associated with Ronald Reagan (her closest international ally). For an intellectual contrast, see Tony Benn, Labour cabinet minister and democratic-socialist figurehead — Benn was the loudest parliamentary opposition to Thatcherism throughout the 1980s. His diaries and Thatcher's autobiography are the two opposing histories of the period — Britain's class politics is structured around which view was right.
